Excel to QIF Converter — For MYOB, GnuCash and older Quicken

Upload the .xlsx your bank's download button gave you, or a register you keep in Excel, and download a QIF. The sheet with the transactions on it is found for you, title rows above the table are fine, and the columns are worked out from what is in them: Debit and Credit, Paid In and Paid Out, or one signed Amount.

Not the file you need?

A bank's Excel download, or a register you keep in a workbook, as a QIF.

Dates from the cell, not its display

A date cell holds a date, whatever regional settings showed it as, so there is no day-or-month question to answer. A date typed as text is read the way a CSV's is, with the order taken from the whole column.

Amounts as the workbook stores them

An amount is the figure the cell holds, not the text it shows, so a column formatted with thousands separators or without decimals converts as the figures it holds.

No invented categories or cheque numbers

A Check No or Ref column stays a reference: this QIF has no N line and no L line, because a column in a workbook does not prove that a number is a cheque's or that a word is a category.

What the QIF file contains

Field by field, where each part of the download comes from.

Sample output

Made by this converter's own code from the made-up workbook shown, laid out cell by cell as Excel displays it. The output is the file it writes, not retyped.

The input: Excel (.xlsx)

A made-up Excel download from a bank: a title block above the table, date cells, Debit and Credit columns, a balance and a Check No column. Shown cell by cell as Excel displays it.

Questions about converting Excel to QIF

Which sheet is converted?

The one with the most rows carrying both a date and an amount, so a summary or notes sheet in front of the transactions is passed over. The preview names the sheet it read and the ones it did not.

Do I need to choose a date format?

Not for the workbook: a date cell holds the date itself, so there is nothing to choose. Your software will ask about the QIF: choose month first, MM/DD/YYYY, which is how every date in it is written.

Which Excel files can it read?

An .xlsx workbook. An old .xls, an .xlsb, a workbook with a password to open it, or a sheet of more than 100,000 rows is refused with what to do instead, usually File, Save As, Excel Workbook (.xlsx).

Are formulas read?

Their saved results are: a formula cell holds the last figure Excel calculated, and that is what is read. A workbook saved by a program that does not calculate formulas has no result saved, so those cells come through empty and the preview says how many.
