QBO to Excel Converter — Free online

A QBO is written for QuickBooks, and nothing else opens it as a table. This turns its transactions into an .xlsx with one row per transaction, dates Excel treats as dates and amounts stored as numbers, so SUM, sorting and pivot tables work the moment it opens.

Not the file you need?

A QuickBooks Web Connect file as a workbook you can sort, filter and add up.

Numbers, not text that looks like numbers

Withdrawals and deposits are stored as numbers and dates as Excel dates, so a total is one SUM away and a sort by date is a sort by date.

Payee and memo together

A QBO splits a long payee across NAME and MEMO. Both are read and joined, so the Description column has all of it.

Cheque numbers kept as written

The cheque number, or the bank's transaction id where there is none, has its own Reference column, stored as text so Excel keeps every digit.

What the Excel file contains

Field by field, where each part of the download comes from.

In your QBOIn the ExcelHow
<DTPOSTED>DateAn Excel date, shown 2026-03-02.
<NAME>, <MEMO>DescriptionJoined as "NAME - MEMO". Where the memo only continues a name cut at 32 characters, the memo alone.
<CHECKNUM>, else <FITID>ReferenceText, so a long id is not turned into 4.2E+22.
<TRNAMT>Withdrawal or DepositA number, placed by its sign and written without the minus.
<LEDGERBAL>Balance column emptyA QBO has no running balance. The closing balance is stated in the preview instead of worked backwards into the column.

Sample output

Made by this converter's own code from the made-up file shown. The output is the file it writes, not retyped.

The input: QBO

A made-up QBO Web Connect file with four transactions, one of them a cheque.

The output: Excel (.xlsx)

Every cell of the workbook, laid out as a table. It has one sheet. In the file, the dates are Excel dates and the amounts are numbers you can add up; the rest is text.

Questions about converting QBO to Excel

Can Excel open a QBO file directly?

Not as a table. A QBO is text with every field inside a tag, so Excel shows the tags run together rather than columns. Converted, each transaction is one row with its date, description, reference and amount in their own columns.

Are the amounts numbers or text?

Numbers, shown with two decimal places, and the dates are Excel dates. The Description and Reference columns are text, so a long transaction id keeps every digit instead of becoming 4.2E+22.

Why is the Balance column empty?

A QBO carries one closing balance, not a balance after each transaction. The closing balance is shown in the preview with its date; a column calculated backwards from it would be figures the bank never stated.
