IIF to QIF Converter — For GnuCash, MYOB and older Quicken
Leaving QuickBooks Desktop for software that reads QIF? An IIF export holds the bookkeeping already done: each transaction's bank line and the account it was posted to. This writes one QIF transaction per bank line, with that account as its category and a cheque's number as its cheque number. A transaction split across several accounts arrives with no category rather than one of them.

QuickBooks Desktop transactions, with their categories, for software that reads QIF.
The category comes with it
A transaction posted to one account in QuickBooks carries that account's name on its L line, exactly as the IIF writes it, Income:Salary included. One split across several accounts gets no L line, and the preview says how many there were.
Cheque numbers, and only cheque numbers
A cheque's Num becomes the QIF's N line. QuickBooks also writes words such as DEBIT and EFT in Num on card payments and transfers; those are not cheque numbers and are not written as one.
The bank side, once
Each TRNS line becomes one QIF transaction for its own amount. The SPL lines are the same money with the opposite sign, so they supply the category and are never added in as transactions of their own.
What the QIF file contains
Field by field, where each part of the download comes from.
| In your IIF | In the QIF | How |
|---|---|---|
| DATE | D line | Written MM/DD/YYYY. Read month first unless a day above 12 proves the file is day first. |
| AMOUNT on TRNS | T line | The bank line's own signed amount. |
| NAME, MEMO | P line | Joined as "NAME - MEMO", up to 96 characters. There is no separate M line. |
| DOCNUM | N line | Only for a TRNSTYPE CHECK whose Num is all digits. DEBIT, EFT and other words are not written. |
| ACCNT on the one SPL | L line | The account exactly as written, such as Income:Salary. With several SPL lines, no L line. |
| ACCNT on TRNS | Not written | The bank account's name. You choose the account when you import the QIF. |
| TRNSID, CLASS, CLEAR | Not written | QuickBooks' own record number, the class and the cleared flag have no place in this QIF. |
| Nothing | !Type:Bank | The first line, marking the file as a bank account. |

^Questions about converting IIF to QIF
Do my QuickBooks categories come across?
Yes, where a transaction was posted to one account: that account's name goes on the L line exactly as the IIF writes it, such as Income:Salary. A transaction split across several accounts has no L line, because naming one would post the whole amount there, and the preview says how many there were.
Why does a transfer to my savings account arrive as a category?
An IIF names the other account the same way whether it is an expense or another bank account, and this writes the name as it is. In QIF, [Savings] in brackets is a transfer and Savings without them is a category, so a transfer arrives as a category of that name. Add the brackets in a text editor before importing, or change it afterwards.
Which date format should I choose when importing?
Month first, MM/DD/YYYY: every date in the QIF is written that way. The IIF's own dates are read month first, as the IIF specification has them, unless one with a day above 12 proves the file was written day first, and the preview says which.
Can Quicken import the QIF?
Not through Web Connect, which is how Quicken brings in checking, savings and credit card transactions: Quicken's own help says QIF files will not work with it, and it takes a QFX. GnuCash and MYOB read a QIF into a bank account.
