Bank Statements for a Visa Application

What visa authorities look for in bank statements, the balance and history requirements, and how to present them.

Most visa categories that require proof of funds ask for bank statements, and the requirements are usually more specific than applicants expect.

Typical requirements

Why converting is useful here

The continuous-balance requirement is exactly the kind of check that is tedious by eye and trivial in a spreadsheet. Convert the statements, and you can confirm in one formula whether the minimum daily balance across the period met the threshold.

It is far better to discover a one-day dip yourself before applying than to have a caseworker find it afterwards.

  1. Convert every statement covering the required period Including any partial months at each end.
  2. Verify each reconciles A gap in your data could hide the dip you are checking for.
  3. Build a daily balance series Carry the balance forward across days with no transactions.
  4. Check the minimum across the period One MIN formula answers the question definitively.

What to actually submit

Submit the bank's original PDFs, or bank-stamped paper statements where required. The converted spreadsheet is for your own checking — visa authorities will not accept a self-produced summary as evidence.

Some authorities also require a bank letter confirming the balance and account details. That is a separate document your bank issues; a statement does not substitute for it.

Building the daily balance series

The continuous-balance requirement is about the balance on every day, including days with no transactions. A statement only shows the balance on days something happened.

  1. Convert every statement covering the period Including partial months at each end.
  2. Build a column of every date in the period Not just transaction dates.
  3. Carry the last known balance forward For days with no transactions, the balance is unchanged from the previous day.
  4. Take the MIN across the series That is the figure the requirement is tested against.

Currency conversion

Where the requirement is stated in a different currency from the account, the conversion rate and date matter. Some authorities specify which rate to use; others accept a reasonable published rate on the date of application.

If the balance is close to the threshold after conversion, that is a risk — exchange movement between application and assessment can push it below.

Frequently asked questions

Can I submit the converted spreadsheet?

No. Visa authorities require original bank documents. Use the conversion to check that you meet the requirement before applying.

How do I check the balance on days with no transactions?

Carry the last known balance forward. The requirement tests every day in the period, not only days something happened.

What if my balance dipped for one day?

Most schemes treat that as failing the requirement. Better to find out and delay the application than to be refused.
