Convert a BNP Paribas Statement to Excel
French bank statement conversion — relevé de compte structure, decimal commas, and the débit/crédit column layout.
French bank statements — relevés de compte — follow their own conventions, and the vocabulary matters as much as the layout.
Column terminology
| French | English |
|---|---|
| Date d'opération | Transaction date |
| Date de valeur | Value date |
| Libellé | Description |
| Débit | Debit |
| Crédit | Credit |
| Solde | Balance |
| Solde précédent | Opening balance |
| Nouveau solde | Closing balance |
A converter that identifies columns by matching English header words finds none of these. Header detection has to be multilingual, or driven by column content rather than header text.
Decimal commas and space separators
French statements write 1 234,56 — a space as the thousands separator and a comma as the decimal. The space is often a non-breaking space, which is a different character from an ordinary space and trips up naive parsers.
Verifying
French statements print solde précédent and nouveau solde — opening and closing balance — plus totals for débits and crédits. That is everything needed for a complete check.
Run it, particularly on a French statement, because the decimal and separator handling has more ways to go wrong than an English-language layout.
Prélèvement and virement rows
French statements distinguish prélèvements (direct debits) from virements (transfers), and the libellé usually carries the type as a prefix. Splitting it out gives you the same benefit as the UK type codes: recurring commitments become filterable in one step.
Prélèvements in particular are worth auditing. Grouping by counterparty gives the complete list of organisations with authority to collect from the account.
Verifying a French statement
- Convert the statement Column identification does not depend on English header text.
- Check one amount against the PDF Confirming the space-and-comma format was read correctly.
- Walk the chain from solde précédent to nouveau solde This is the definitive check.
- Compare the débit and crédit totals Against the printed figures, for completeness.
Frequently asked questions
Are other French banks supported?
The reader works from the table on the page rather than a list of banks, so a Société Générale or Crédit Agricole relevé is read the same way. The Completeness sheet tells you whether yours came out right.
How do I audit my prélèvements?
Filter to prélèvement rows and group by counterparty. That gives every organisation with authority to collect from the account.
Will the French column headers be translated?
No. The export keeps the headings exactly as the relevé prints them, accents included, so it still matches the statement. The terminology table above gives the English for each if you are combining files from several countries.
