Convert a Lloyds Bank Statement PDF to Excel

Lloyds statement layout, the transaction type codes worth splitting out, and how to verify your converted file against the printed balances.

Lloyds statements use a clean five-column layout — date, description, type, paid out, paid in, balance — that converts well. The value is mostly in what you do with the type column.

The transaction type code

Lloyds prints a two or three letter code against every transaction: DD for direct debit, SO for standing order, FPI and FPO for faster payments in and out, DEB for debit card, CSH for cash.

These are more useful than they look. Once in their own column they let you answer questions the description alone cannot — how much leaves by direct debit each month, whether a payment was a card purchase or a transfer, which recurring commitments exist.

Balance on every row

Lloyds prints a running balance on every transaction, which means full chain verification is available: each row's balance must equal the previous balance minus the paid out plus the paid in.

That single check validates every amount in the file. Combined with a comparison against the printed opening and closing balances, it proves the extraction is both correct and complete.

Converting a Lloyds statement

  1. Download the PDF from Internet Banking Statements are available per account for the last several years.
  2. Upload the whole file Including the summary lines, which carry the opening and closing balances.
  3. Check the chain Every row's balance should follow from the previous one.
  4. Use the type column Lloyds prints it as a column of its own and the converted file keeps it that way, which makes filtering by commitment type immediate.

Finding your recurring commitments

One of the most common reasons to convert a personal statement is to find out what is actually leaving the account each month. The type column makes this a two-step job.

Filter to DD and SO rows, then group by description. What comes back is the complete list of direct debits and standing orders, with amounts and frequencies — including the ones you set up years ago and forgot about.
