Convert an ANZ Bank Statement to Excel

ANZ statement conversion across Australian and New Zealand layouts, and the verification each supports.

ANZ operates in both Australia and New Zealand with layouts that differ, and New Zealand statements carry a structural feature worth knowing about.

New Zealand transaction codes

New Zealand bank statements typically carry a transaction type code alongside each row — the local equivalent of the UK's DD and SO codes. They identify direct debits, automatic payments, EFTPOS transactions and bill payments.

Split into their own column, they make recurring commitments easy to identify, which is the most common reason people convert a statement in the first place.

The New Zealand account number format — four parts including a suffix — is distinctive, and like the Australian BSB it belongs in its own column rather than inside a description.

Verifying

Both layouts carry a running balance and period totals, so full verification is available. Run both checks: the chain proves the amounts, the totals prove nothing is missing.

Converting

  1. Download the statement PDF From ANZ Internet Banking or goMoney, per account and period.
  2. Upload the whole file Including summary pages carrying the period totals.
  3. Confirm the dates are inside the period DD/MM is ambiguous below the 13th, so this check is worth thirty seconds.
  4. Run both verification checks The chain for correctness, the totals for completeness.

Automatic payments versus direct debits

New Zealand distinguishes automatic payments — which you control and can cancel yourself — from direct debits, which the payee initiates. The transaction code tells you which is which.

That distinction matters practically: reviewing your recurring outgoings, the automatic payments are ones you set up and may have forgotten, and the direct debits are authorities you have granted to third parties. Filtering by code separates them in one step.

Frequently asked questions

Are New Zealand transaction codes preserved?

Yes, in their own column where the statement prints them.

Can I list all my recurring payments?

Filter by the automatic payment and direct debit transaction codes. That gives the complete set of recurring commitments without reading descriptions.

Do Australian and NZ exports have the same columns?

No. Each keeps the columns its statement printed, so a New Zealand export carries its transaction code column and an Australian one may not. Line them up by heading before combining them.
