Convert a DBS Bank Statement to Excel
DBS statement conversion for Singapore accounts, the multi-currency structure, and verifying per currency.
DBS statements are well-structured and convert reliably. The complication, as with most Singapore banks, is multi-currency accounts.
Multi-currency accounts have separate balances
A DBS Multi-Currency Account holds SGD, USD, EUR and others in parallel. Each currency has its own balance and its own transaction stream.
The essential requirement is a currency column on every row, and verification run per currency. A single debit total spanning SGD and USD is not a meaningful figure.
Combined statements
DBS also issues combined statements covering several products — a savings account, a multiplier account, a credit card, sometimes an investment account — in one PDF.
That needs an account column in addition to a currency column, and per-account verification. The card section carries no running balance and verifies against printed totals instead.
| Section | Balance chain? | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Savings / Multiplier | Yes | Full chain plus totals |
| Multi-currency | Yes, per currency | Chain per currency |
| Credit card | No | Printed totals only |
| Investment holdings | Not transactions | Leave them out of any total |
Singapore date and reference conventions
DBS statements use DD MMM YYYY — 03 Apr 2026 — which is unambiguous and one less thing to get wrong. Where a statement uses the numeric DD/MM/YYYY form instead, the convention has to be inferred from the file rather than assumed.
PayNow and FAST transfers carry a reference field that most Singapore businesses use for invoice numbers. Keeping it out of the description and in its own column is what turns invoice reconciliation into a lookup.
Converting a DBS statement
- Download the PDF from DBS digibank Available per account and per period. The e-statement carries a proper text layer.
- Upload the whole document Do not split a combined statement — the section headers are what identify which account each block belongs to.
- Label each section, then filter No account or currency column is added, but the rows stay in printed order, section by section. Fill both columns down from where each section starts — the PDF shows where — then filter to one account and one currency before summing anything.
- Verify that slice Its own opening balance, transactions and closing balance.
Frequently asked questions
Are POSB statements the same format?
POSB is part of DBS and uses closely related layouts, detected individually.
Why do my totals look wrong on a multi-currency account?
Almost certainly because amounts in different currencies were summed together. Filter to one currency first — a total spanning SGD and USD is not a meaningful figure.
Is the currency exported?
Only where DBS prints it on the row. No currency column is added, so where each currency has its own section, fill a currency column down from where each currency's section starts before totalling — without it the amounts cannot be interpreted.
