Convert a Maybank Statement to Excel
Maybank statement conversion, including Islamic banking terminology and the conventional/Islamic account differences.
Maybank is Malaysia's largest bank and issues both conventional and Islamic account statements. The Islamic ones use different terminology, and that difference is not cosmetic.
Islamic banking terminology
Islamic accounts avoid interest, and the statement vocabulary reflects the underlying contracts rather than a conventional deposit relationship.
| Islamic term | Conventional equivalent |
|---|---|
| Wadiah / Mudarabah | Deposit account type |
| Hibah | Profit paid to the account holder — not interest |
| Ujrah | Fee for services |
| Tawarruq / Murabahah | Financing arrangement |
| Profit sharing | Interest credit |
A converter that looks for the word "interest" to identify income rows finds nothing on an Islamic statement. Hibah credits are the equivalent, and they are genuine transactions that must appear in the export for the balance to reconcile.
Maybank2u statement layout
Statements downloaded from Maybank2u carry a running balance and clear period totals, so full verification is available on both conventional and Islamic accounts.
Dates are DD/MM/YYYY, which is ambiguous below the 13th and needs resolving from the file rather than assumed.
What the Maybank export contains
| In the file | What you get |
|---|---|
| Maybank's own columns | Every heading as printed, in the same order |
| Dates | Exactly as printed, DD/MM/YYYY, with nothing reformatted |
| Descriptions | In full, Islamic terms and DuitNow references included, with wrapped lines joined into one cell |
| Amounts | Each figure in the column Maybank printed it in — Hibah and profit credits sit with the other credits |
| A Completeness sheet | Every row checked against the printed running balance, and the statement's own totals where it prints them |
DuitNow and instant transfer references
DuitNow transfers carry a reference the payer sets, and Malaysian businesses commonly use it for invoice numbers. As elsewhere, it belongs in its own column so it can drive a lookup rather than needing manual reading.
The transfer descriptors also carry the counterparty bank and a long numeric reference. That reference is exactly the kind of ten-plus-digit number that must never be treated as an amount.
Verifying
Maybank2u statements print opening and closing balances and period totals, so run both checks. On an Islamic account, confirm the Hibah credits are present — if the credit total falls short of the printed figure, missing profit credits are the likely cause.
Frequently asked questions
Are Maybank Islamic statements supported?
Yes. Hibah and profit credits come through in the column Maybank prints them in, and the balance check works from the figures rather than the words, so Islamic terminology makes no difference to it.
Do profit credits appear in the export?
Yes. Hibah and profit-sharing credits are genuine transactions and must be present for the balance to reconcile.
Are other Malaysian banks supported?
The reader works from the table on the page rather than a list of banks, so a statement from any Malaysian bank is read the same way. The Completeness sheet tells you whether yours came out right.
