Convert a Monzo Statement to Excel
Monzo's app-first statement format, the merchant data it includes, and how it differs from a traditional bank statement.
Monzo was built app-first, and its PDF statements are a rendering of app data rather than a print document that happens to be digital. That shows in what they contain.
Cleaner merchant data than a traditional bank
Traditional bank statements carry raw card acquirer descriptors — the unhelpful `TFL TRAVEL CH LONDON GB` strings. Monzo enriches these into recognisable merchant names before they reach the statement.
For anyone doing spending analysis, this is a genuine advantage: the categorisation work is largely done. Monzo also assigns spending categories, which are worth preserving as a column.
Pots complicate the balance
Monzo Pots are sub-accounts that hold money separately from the main balance. Transfers to and from Pots appear as transactions, and whether the main balance reflects Pot holdings depends on the statement.
This matters for verification. If Pot transfers are treated as ordinary debits and credits but the balance column excludes Pot movements, the chain will not reconcile — through no fault of the extraction.
What you get
| In the file | What you get |
|---|---|
| Monzo's own columns | Every heading as printed, in the same order |
| Dates | Exactly as printed, with nothing reformatted |
| Merchant | Monzo's enriched name, as it appears on the statement |
| Category | Monzo's own category, where the statement prints one |
| Money in and out | Each figure in the column Monzo printed it in |
| A Completeness sheet | Every row checked against the printed balance, and the statement's own totals where it prints them |
Spending analysis on a Monzo export
Because Monzo enriches merchant names and assigns categories, a converted Monzo statement is unusually ready for analysis. The work that normally dominates — cleaning merchant strings so they group consistently — is largely done.
That makes a few things practical straight away:
- Monthly spend by category — pivot on category and month
- Recurring subscriptions — group by merchant and look for consistent monthly amounts
- Largest counterparties — sort by summed debit descending
- Spend excluding transfers — filter out Pot movements and own-account transfers first
Verifying
Monzo statements carry a running balance and period totals. Run both checks — and if the chain fails while the totals match, Pot movements are the likely explanation rather than an extraction error.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a CSV directly from Monzo?
Yes, Monzo offers CSV export in-app for recent periods. Converting the PDF is mainly useful for older history, or when you need a statement-accurate record.
Why does my Monzo balance chain not reconcile?
Pot transfers are the usual cause — whether they affect the main balance depends on the statement. Check whether Pot rows are being applied to a balance that excludes them.
Are Pot transfers included?
Yes, as transactions. Whether they affect the running balance depends on the statement, which is worth checking if the chain does not reconcile.
