Convert an M&T Bank Statement to Excel
M&T Bank statement sections, the running balance behaviour, and the checks that confirm a converted file is complete.
M&T Bank statements sit between the two common US patterns: they use typed sections, but some layouts also carry a running balance column.
A running balance changes what verification can prove
Most US sectioned statements have no running balance, which limits verification to comparing totals — that catches missing rows but cannot tell you which row is wrong.
Where M&T prints a running balance, the stronger check becomes available: each row's balance must follow arithmetically from the previous row's. That validates every amount individually and points at the exact row where anything went wrong.
| Available data | What you can prove |
|---|---|
| Printed totals only | Whether anything is missing |
| Running balance only | Whether the amounts are right and in order |
| Both | Complete verification — nothing missing and nothing wrong |
Section ordering versus balance ordering
One thing to watch: when a sectioned statement also carries a running balance, the balance follows chronological order, not section order. Extract the sections in the order they are printed and the balance column will appear to jump backwards and forwards.
Sort by date before checking the chain. This is a common cause of a correct extraction appearing to fail verification.
Getting one chronological table
US statements are typed sections rather than a single list, and what you almost always want is one date-sorted table with proper debit and credit columns.
That means detecting each section, applying its direction to every row inside it, discarding its subtotal, and merging the result. Lose the section context and every amount becomes ambiguous, because the rows themselves carry no sign.
Which check to rely on
On an M&T layout that prints a running balance, use the chain as the primary check and the totals as the completeness check. On a layout without one, the totals are all you have, and verification should be reported as partial rather than complete.
That distinction matters. A tool that reports the same confidence for both cases is overstating what it checked on the weaker one.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my balance column jump around?
Sections were merged in printed order rather than chronological order. Sort by date and the chain resolves.
What does partial verification mean?
That some checks ran but the statement did not print everything needed for a complete check — most often an absent running balance or missing period totals.
Do all M&T layouts carry a running balance?
No. Where it is absent, verification falls back to comparing against printed totals and reports that it was partial.
