Convert a PNC Bank Statement to Excel
PNC statement sections, the daily balance detail block that isn't transaction data, and how to confirm your export is complete.
PNC statements carry a Daily Balance Detail block that causes more bad conversions than anything else about the format.
Daily balance detail is not transactions
Near the end of a PNC statement is a compact block listing each date in the period alongside the balance at the end of that day. It has dates. It has amounts. Structurally it is indistinguishable from a transaction table to anything doing pattern matching.
Imported as transactions, it adds up to 31 rows carrying a balance but no debit or credit. Your row count is wrong, your balance column has duplicate entries, and any downstream analysis of transaction frequency is nonsense.
PNC's transaction sections
| Section | Direction |
|---|---|
| Deposits and Other Additions | Credit |
| Checks and Substitute Checks | Debit |
| Banking/Debit Card Withdrawals and Purchases | Debit |
| Online and Electronic Banking Deductions | Debit |
| Other Deductions | Debit |
| Service Charges and Fees | Debit |
PNC prints amounts without signs. The section heading is the only thing that determines direction, so a converter that merges sections without tracking which one each row came from cannot know whether an amount is money in or out.
Verifying
PNC prints a summary with beginning balance, deposits and additions, checks and other deductions, and ending balance. Check all four. Matching only the ending balance will not catch a missing deposit that happens to be offset by a missing withdrawal.
Getting one chronological table
US statements are typed sections rather than a single list, and what you almost always want is one date-sorted table with proper debit and credit columns.
That means detecting each section, applying its direction to every row inside it, discarding its subtotal, and merging the result. Lose the section context and every amount becomes ambiguous, because the rows themselves carry no sign.
Verifying a PNC conversion
- Confirm the daily balance block was excluded No run of consecutive dates carrying a balance but no debit or credit.
- Check each section against its subtotal Extracted rows per section should sum to the printed subtotal.
- Check all four summary figures Beginning balance, deposits, withdrawals, ending balance.
- Sort by date The merged output should be chronological, not in section order.
