Convert a Nationwide Building Society Statement to Excel
Nationwide statement layout, the building society terminology, and confirming your converted file reconciles.
Nationwide is a building society rather than a bank, which changes some terminology but very little about the conversion itself.
Layout
Nationwide uses a standard UK layout: date, description, transaction type, paid out, paid in, balance. A running balance on every row means full chain verification is available.
The transaction type column carries the same family of codes as the high-street banks — direct debit, standing order, faster payment, card purchase — and is worth splitting out for the same reasons.
FlexAccount and savings statements differ
Nationwide's current account statements look like any UK current account. Their savings statements are sparser — often only interest credits and occasional transfers, with long gaps between transactions.
Sparse statements have their own small trap: with only three or four transactions across a year, a single missing row is a much larger proportion of the data, and the closing balance shifts noticeably. This is easier to spot than on a busy account, but worth actually checking rather than assuming.
Verifying
Chain plus totals, as usual. On a savings account with few transactions, the chain alone is nearly conclusive because there is so little to get wrong.
What the export contains
| In the file | What you get |
|---|---|
| Nationwide's own columns | Every heading as printed, in the same order, transaction type included |
| Dates | Exactly as printed, with nothing reformatted |
| Descriptions | In full, references included, with wrapped lines joined into one cell |
| Paid out and Paid in | Each figure in the column Nationwide printed it in |
| A Completeness sheet | Every row checked against the printed running balance, interest credits included |
Building a multi-year savings picture
Savings statements are most useful combined across years, because the interesting questions are long-run: how much was actually saved, what the effective rate worked out at, whether contributions were regular.
Convert each year, combine the exports, and check continuity — each period's closing balance should equal the next one's opening balance. A gap means a statement is missing from the set.
Frequently asked questions
Are Nationwide ISA statements supported?
Yes. Cash ISA statements use the same savings layout.
How do I work out the interest I actually earned?
Filter to interest credits and sum them for the period. Dividing by the average balance gives the effective rate, which is often below the headline figure.
Does the transaction type come through?
Yes, as its own column where Nationwide prints it.
