Convert a Wells Fargo Statement PDF to Excel or CSV

Wells Fargo statement layouts, the daily-balance summary that isn't transaction data, and how to verify your converted file is complete.

Wells Fargo statements are dense. They pack a transaction history, a daily ending balance summary, an interest summary and a fee period summary onto the same pages — and only one of those is transaction data.

The daily balance summary is not transactions

Near the end of a Wells Fargo statement there is usually a compact block listing each date and the ending balance on that date. It has dates. It has amounts. It looks exactly like a transaction table to a pattern-matching converter.

Pull it in as transactions and you get dozens of phantom rows with balances but no debits or credits, and your totals become meaningless. Recognising and excluding this block is one of the specific things a Wells Fargo-aware converter needs to do.

Multi-line descriptions

Wells Fargo descriptions frequently run to two or three visual lines — merchant name on one line, location and reference on the next. Only the first line carries the date and amount.

The rule that works: a line without a date is a continuation of the transaction above it. Join it on rather than emitting it as its own row.

Verifying a Wells Fargo conversion

Wells Fargo prints a clear summary: beginning balance, deposits/credits, withdrawals/debits, ending balance. Check your converted totals against all four. Matching only the ending balance is not enough — a missing debit and a missing credit of the same size cancel out and leave the closing balance looking correct.

Step by step

  1. Download the PDF from Wells Fargo online banking The e-statement has a text layer; a scan of a mailed statement does not.
  2. Upload the complete file Including the summary pages — those printed totals are what make a full verification possible.
  3. Confirm all four summary figures Beginning balance, deposits total, withdrawals total and ending balance should each match your extracted data.
  4. Export as Excel, CSV or JSON The Excel file keeps the transactions on one sheet and the checks on a Completeness sheet beside it.

What you get back

In the fileWhat you get
Wells Fargo's own columnsEvery heading as printed, in the same order. Nothing is renamed or mapped onto a template
DatesExactly as printed, with nothing reformatted
DescriptionsMulti-line descriptions joined back into one cell, not split into rows
Deposits and withdrawalsEach figure in the column Wells Fargo printed it in
Ending daily balanceWhere Wells Fargo printed one, and blank where it did not. A blank is never filled with a zero
A Completeness sheetThe rows checked against the balances printed beside them, and against the statement's own totals where it prints them

For QuickBooks or Quicken, the QBO and QFX downloads write each transaction with a real date and one signed amount, because those formats will not take anything else.

Why matching only the closing balance is not enough

This is worth being specific about, because it is the check most people stop at. Suppose a converter drops one debit of $400 and one credit of $400. The closing balance is unaffected — the two errors cancel exactly. The file passes the only test most people run.

Comparing the deposits total and the withdrawals total separately catches it immediately, because each is now off by $400 in its own direction. That is why the four-figure check above matters rather than just the last number.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work with Wells Fargo business statements?

Yes, including the additional fee and service-charge sections that business accounts carry.

Why does my export contain rows with a balance but no transaction?

That is the daily ending balance summary being pulled in as transaction data. It is a separate block on the statement and should be excluded from the transaction list.

Can I convert Wells Fargo credit card statements?

Yes. There is no running balance to chain, so verification compares against the printed totals.

My statement is a scan, not a downloaded PDF. Will it work?

Yes, via OCR, but accuracy is lower than a native PDF. Download the original from online banking if you still can — see the scanned statement guide.
