Convert a Discover Bank Statement to Excel

Discover statement conversion for both bank accounts and credit cards, and the different verification each one supports.

Discover issues both deposit account statements and credit card statements, and they need different treatment — a good example of why "which bank" is a less useful question than "which product".

Card statements: categories are already there

Discover card statements group purchases by spending category — gas, restaurants, groceries — as part of their cashback programme. That categorisation is genuinely useful and worth preserving as a column rather than discarding.

It saves the most tedious part of analysing card spending, which is categorising a few hundred merchant strings by hand. The bank has already done it.

Cashback and rewards rows

Cashback credits appear as transactions. They are real credits against the balance and belong in the export. Some converters filter them out as "not real spending", which leaves your credit total short of the printed figure.

Discover Bank deposit accounts

The deposit side — online savings, CDs, money market — carries a running balance and supports full chain verification. Interest credits are monthly and small, and are the rows most often missed in a manual review.

Using the bank's categories

Discover's category assignments come from merchant category codes the bank holds and you do not. That makes them more reliable than anything you could infer from a merchant name afterwards.

The practical implication is that on a Discover statement you can skip most of the categorisation step. The rows come through in the order Discover printed them, category by category, so fill a category column down from where each category starts and pivot on it for a spending breakdown.

Rotating category tracking

Discover's cashback categories rotate quarterly, and tracking whether you actually hit the spending cap in each rotating category is exactly the sort of question a converted statement answers in one formula and a PDF does not answer at all.

Frequently asked questions

Are spending categories preserved?

Yes, exactly as Discover prints them. Where purchases are grouped under category headings, the rows keep that grouping, so a category column is one fill-down from where each category starts.

Can I check whether I hit the quarterly cashback cap?

Yes — filter to the rotating category for that quarter and sum. It is one formula once the data is in a spreadsheet.

Do cashback credits appear as transactions?

Yes. They are genuine credits and are included, which is necessary for the credit total to match the printed figure.
