Convert a SoFi Statement to Excel
SoFi statement conversion for checking, savings and invest accounts, and what changes when a statement covers several product types.
SoFi statements can span several product types in one document — a checking and savings account, sometimes alongside an investment account. Those behave differently enough that they need separating.
Cash accounts and investment accounts are not the same data
A cash account statement is a list of transactions with a running balance. An investment account statement is a list of trades, positions and a market value that changes without any transaction occurring at all.
Merging them into one table produces something that is not meaningful as either. Market value movements are not transactions, and a balance chain across mixed account types will never reconcile.
What converts cleanly
| Section | What it is | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Checking activity | Transaction rows with a running balance | Full chain plus totals |
| Savings activity | Transaction rows with a running balance | Full chain plus totals |
| Interest earned | Credit transactions | Included in credit totals |
| Investment trades | Trade rows — quantity, price, amount | Totals only, no balance chain |
| Position values | Not transactions | Leave them out of any total |
Verifying
Run verification per account section. The cash accounts support full chain verification; the investment section supports a totals comparison at best. Reporting one figure across both would be meaningless.
Why mixed statements need splitting first
The temptation with a combined SoFi statement is to convert it and start analysing. That produces confident nonsense if the sections are mixed.
A market value change is not a transaction. Including investment position rows in a spending total adds a number that does not represent money moving. And a balance chain that spans cash and investment sections will never reconcile, because they are not one balance.
- Filter to one account section first Before summing or charting anything.
- Verify the cash sections properly Full chain plus totals.
- Treat investment sections separately Trades are transactions; positions are not.
- Never combine the two in one total They measure different things.
Frequently asked questions
Can I extract just the checking transactions?
Yes, by section. No account column is added, but the rows come through in the order SoFi printed them, so the checking section's rows sit together: copy that block to its own sheet, or add an Account column filled down from where each section starts.
Why does my balance chain fail on a SoFi statement?
Usually because cash and investment sections were merged. They are separate balances and cannot form one chain.
Are investment positions exported?
Do not rely on them being left out. A change in market value is not a transaction, so check the converted file for position rows and leave any out of your totals.
