Convert a Truist Bank Statement to Excel

Truist statement conversion, including the legacy BB&T and SunTrust layouts still in circulation after the merger.

Truist was formed from the merger of BB&T and SunTrust, and that history is the main thing affecting statement conversion today.

Three layouts in circulation

Depending on which legacy bank an account originated with and when it was migrated, you may encounter the current Truist template, a legacy BB&T layout, or a legacy SunTrust layout. They differ in column ordering, section naming and date formatting.

If you are assembling several years of history — for a mortgage application, say — you may well have all three in one set.

Checking continuity across statements

When you combine several converted statements, one check matters more than any other: each statement's ending balance should equal the next one's beginning balance.

A gap means a period is missing from your set. This is a very common problem when pulling history — a month that was never downloaded, or a statement that failed to convert and was quietly skipped. It is also the kind of gap a mortgage underwriter will notice.

  1. Convert each statement individually Each is verified against its own printed totals.
  2. Line the columns up, combine, and sort by date Each export keeps its legacy layout's own columns, so match them by heading before stacking a BB&T or SunTrust export on a Truist one.
  3. Check period continuity Ending balance of one period should equal beginning balance of the next.
  4. Investigate any gap A discontinuity means a missing statement, not a conversion error.

Assembling a mortgage-ready history

Truist statements are frequently converted for exactly this purpose — a lender wants two or three years, and that span often crosses the merger.

  1. List the periods you need before you start So a missing month is obvious at the outset rather than after conversion.
  2. Download each as a native PDF Not screenshots. Lenders want the bank's own document anyway.
  3. Convert and verify each individually Against its own printed totals.
  4. Check continuity across the set Each closing balance against the next opening balance.
  5. Submit the PDFs, keep the spreadsheet for yourself The export is how you check what the lender will see.

Frequently asked questions

My older statements look completely different. Will they convert?

Yes. Legacy BB&T and SunTrust layouts are detected as their own formats rather than forced into the current Truist template.

Why does the lender care about period continuity?

A gap could conceal a period the applicant would rather not show. Underwriters check closing-to-opening balance across statements for exactly that reason.

Do the exports have the same columns across layouts?

No. Each keeps the columns its statement printed, which is what makes it checkable against the PDF. Match the columns by heading before combining exports from different legacy layouts.
